The history of Chang’an Avenue
If there is a street to be remembered as the face of Beijing or even China, it must be Chang’an Avenue. Because of its location, a lot of big events in Chinese history happened on the street.
Chang’an Avenue was first built between 1406 and 1420. It was an important part in old Beijing in the Ming Dynasty. The street was not for ordinary people then. It only served the imperial court. It was opened to the public in 1911 after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. The avenue became a main road in 1950. It was the beginning of a new China.
Many important places can be found along Chang’an Avenue, such as Tian’anmen Square, the Great Hall of the People and the National Museum.
In January,1976, thousands of crying people waited along the street. They were saying farewell to Premier Zhou Enlai. On October 1st 2009, an exciting grand military parade was held on the street. Chang’an Avenue is and will be remembered by Chinese people for all these touching scenes.
