The Lady or the Tiger?
Once there lived a king who had strange ways. One of these was how he dispensed justice. When someone was accused of a crime of importance, the king gave notice that the fate of the accused would be decided in the arena before the eyes of all. On the chosen day, the king, his court, and all the people sat in the huge arena. Opposite the king were two doors, exactly alike, set side by side. At the king's singal, the accused would enter the arena, walk to the doors, and open one of them. Behind one door was a hungry tiger which would devour the prisoner as a punishment for his guilt. Behind the other door was a beautiful lady to whom the prisoner would be married immediately as a reward for his innocence.
This plan seemed most fair to the king. The accused could choose his own fate. He simply opened a door and was once either devoured or married.
It happened that the king's beautiful daughter, whom he loved above all other things, had fallen in love with a handsome youth of lowly birth. When the king found that they loved each other, he put the young man into prison and set a day for his trial in the arena. Then the king ordered the biggest tiger and the most beautiful maiden to be found in his kingdom.
Finally, the day of the trial arrived. The young man entered the arena. He was so fair that the crowd greeted him with a hum of admiration and fear. How terrible this was for him.
Advancing into the arena, the youth bowed to the king. But he fixed his eyes upon the princess, who sat at her father's right. The young man saw in her eyes that the princess knew on which side was the tiger and on which the lady. There was not a moment to lose. His eyes asked her,“Which door shall I choose?”
The princess knew that the maiden her father had chosen was one of the loveliest in the land. In the past, she had seen this fair girl throw glances at the youth. Sometimes, she even suspected that these glances were returned. How could she bear to lose her lover to another woman? But, on the other hand, the youth was her lover. How could she bear to see him torn apart by a tiger? The princess paused. Then acting on the decision she had made after days and nights of weighing the awful choice, she nodded to the right. The young man saw it, and without hesitating, walked to the right hand door and opened it.
Which came out, the lady or the tiger? The readers are to finish the story and give their reasons

The lady or the tiger
It was the last moment for the young man to make the choice of going to the right door or the left. Everyone was waiting for him, men and women, young and old.
The young man stood in front of the two doors. He stared at the left door for a while, then to the right one. He put his hands before him and closed his eyes. He could not help thinking: Believe her or not? If I died, and what will my lover’s life be? My god, please help me! I am not afraid of the death, but I am really afraid of being lost my lover. His eyes were filled with tears. His heart nearly stopped beating. Suddenly, he opened his eyes, turned back and looked at the princess. His eye met hers again, for only a moment, but full of thankfulness. This was that his quick and thankful glance answered the question:“Thank you for telling me! I will go to the door on the right.”Then he faced the right door and began his steps. Every heart stopped beating.
“Wait a minute!” The princess shouted out of breath and ran to him. At that moment she knew that she could not let him die because she loved him very much, although he didn’t love her at all. She stood in front of him, faced him, stared at him and had a quick, gentle kiss that full of love on his face. She pointed to his nose with her right pointer, and drew a circle, stayed for a while. Every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon them.
The right door was opened. There came the tiger, the awful tiger. Everyone cried in fear, especially the young man. But suddenly, the awful tiger disappeared. He was changed to a handsome man. He walked straight to the princess and stared at her, full of love. At the same moment, the left door was opened. There came the lady. She ran to the young man—her lover, with a sweet smiling face. The cheers of the crowd were full of the arena.
The handsome man and the princess were smiling happily, but the young man and the lady were smiling confusedly. Two minutes later, the princess turned to the young man and the lady, said to them: I know you feel confused, but I have to tell you the reason in twenty years. I hope you’ll have a happy life from now on.
Nobody knew the reason until in twenty years. Let’s wait and see.
