that 在定语从句里是关系代词,不可以在从句里作状语：why是关系副词可以做从句原因状语 例：the reason why i do this is just for you .the reason that i told you yesterday .楼主试比较.也就是说,关系副词作状语,代词做主,宾语.看不懂,不动就追问.
the reason肯定是可以作先行词，why和that都可以引导定语从句。但why作引导词的时候，the reason才能在从句里作状语；如果是that作引导词，那么，the reason只能在从句里作主语或者宾语等。例如：
I don't know the reason why he is late.此句里，why=for which,代替先行词the reason在从句里作状语。
