The body distance between two speakers can be of great importance in communication.However ,people in different cultures are different in their space habits,which sometimes resulets in misunderstanding or failures in intercultural communication
Arabs,Latin Americans,and Italians belong to a high-contact culture and prefere close contact .In conversation,they tend to stand very close to the person they are talking to,look into his eyes and hold his hand tightly.
In contrast ,relatively speaking,Germans and North Americans live in a low-contact culture .They prefer a great body distance both in communcation and in daily life .They teach their children not to crowd in and lean on them when they are very young .And in situations where are ovliged to stand close to another person,such as in crowded subways or elevators,they’ll try their best to avoid any possible body contact ,and turn their eyes away.
